The Nature Crime Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating efforts among the MaMaBay program to develop and implement strategies to prevent nature crimes. The Coordinator will collaborate with different departments to gather, analyze, and report data related to nature crimes in the MaMaBay landscape and seascape. This role will also develop crime prevention strategies that align with the program’s conservation targets, ensuring their successful application across the program’s activities. By addressing illegal activities such as deforestation, wildlife trafficking, and unsustainable natural resources use, the Coordinator will play a key role in maintaining the integrity of MaMaBay’s unique biodiversity and ensuring sustainable resources governance for the benefit of local communities.

Major Responsibilities
In close collaboration with the WCS Global Counter-Wildlife Trafficking Unit, local staff and external experts as necessary, the Nature Crime Coordinator will:
Interdepartmental Collaboration
- Work closely with all departments – Science, Protected Areas, Rights & Communities – to gather and consolidate data on nature crimes.
- In collaboration with the social sciences team, develop questionnaires and data collection methods to gather baseline data on wild meat consumption to inform interventions.
- Facilitate communication and knowledge-sharing among departments to ensure coordinated responses.
- Provide training to relevant staff and community groups on crime monitoring and prevention strategies.
Data Collection and Analysis
- Identify synergies and overlaps within the design and implementation of data collection systems to monitor illegal activities such as wildlife trafficking, poaching, illegal logging, and unsustainable resource use.
- Ensure all data is managed and analyzed effectively to inform strategic decision-making.
Crime Prevention Strategy Development
- Using crime script analysis techniques and involving relevant departments, facilitate the development process of realistic and effective crime prevention strategies based on gathered data and program targets, including law enforcement, public awareness, and community engagement.
- Ensure strategies are aligned with MaMaBay’s broader conservation objectives, including the protection of key biodiversity targets (e.g. Lemurs, forest integrity, marine wildlife) and ecosystem services (e.g. Carbon sequestration, sustainable fisheries).
Cross-sectoral Collaboration
- Work with external partners, including government agencies, local law enforcement, and NGOs, to align efforts and ensure a comprehensive approach to crime prevention within the landscape.
- Collaborate with governance bodies to improve regulatory environments, strengthen compliance mechanisms and address gaps in enforcement capacity.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Regularly assess the impact of crime prevention strategies, refining approaches based on new data and lessons learned.
- Ensure adaptive management of conservation targets, incorporating feedback from all relevant departments.
Reporting
- Contribute to technical reports on crime prevention efforts and their impact on conservation outcomes.
- Contribute to the MaMaBay program's overall reporting requirements, ensuring transparency and accountability to donors and partners.
Other responsibilities
- Perform any other task required by the supervisor that is relevant to the position described and contribute to the overall MaMaBay goals and mission through special projects as needed.
- This role will fulfil the Project Lead role for a Counter-Wildlife Trafficking grant funded by DEFRA.

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental or Social sciences, Criminology, or related fields.
- 5+ years of experience in crime prevention, law enforcement, or conservation, with a focus on biodiversity protection and natural resource management.
- Proven ability to design and implement data collection and crime prevention strategies.
- Strong collaboration skills and experience working with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience in community-based conservation and working in rural or remote areas is an asset.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills in Malagasy and French. English is a strong advantage.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and adapt to challenging field conditions.
Additional Requirements
• Availability for site visits and field missions.
• Adaptability to working across different time zones and coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
